The Other Side of Chinese Growth - Ghost Cities

These amazing images show sprawling cities built in remote parts of china which are completely empty, even years after construction!  China in their drive for high GDP figures has created a huge real estate speculative boom which is at dangerous levels. Around 20 new cities are built every where which find few end users.

China's most famous ghost city - Ordos

The area is filled with office towers, administrative centers, government buildings, museums, theaters and sports fields—not to mention acre on acre of subdivisions overflowing with middle-class duplexes and bungalows.

The only problem: the district was originally designed to house, support and entertain 1 million people, yet hardly anyone lives there.

There are no cars in the city, except for a few dozen parked at the glamorous government center!

Here's China's biggest ghost city: Zhengzhou New District

This city was built in the middle of a desert: Erenhot, Xilin Gol, Inner Mongolia

Half of Erenhot is empty. The other half is unfinished

The ghost city of Dantu has been mostly empty for over a decade

In most neighborhoods of Dantu, there are no cars, no signs of life

The mostly empty city of Bayannao’er, which boasts a beautiful town hall and World Bank-sponsored water reclamation building

These are just a few examples of the many ghost cities. List would surely keep increasing with many more being made every year!

look at the bigger picture. true it looks like a ghost town, but this was a built with a vision in mind for future occupation, what is the point in building houses malls around the ever expanding cities? so i think its a good idea, chinese govt need to look into how to populate this place though!

What a contrast!!!.
In India we occupy and build the city whereas in China they are so much proactive that they had built the city and waiting to occupy. If they divert a fraction of the population these cities can be filleed. But their intentions seemed to be to lure the outsiders.

The city has to be maintained. Then it will survive. More links like rail, road should be constructed with job oppertunities.

its good idea to build new cities provided its economical and with basic facilities like water, transport system, agricultural land nearby..
in this way we can solve many problems like overcrowding, distribution of work & wealth, unemployment, traffic jams and many many more..

Now Indian cities are also like this with so many apartments empty. People are becoming proactive and try to meet the future much in advance. :o Better live with lesser amenities and gradually grow than try to meet your future requirements much in advance! :P It is something like building a tomb well even before one is born. :sigh:
Only when we revert to villages and and live a simpler life sharing our wealth with each other, the world progresses and not by trying to build more and more facilities which we may never use!

I have been living in zhengzhou for last 5years. and I have witnessed the changes too. Now dense population can be found in this district (called CBD, zhengzhou).
