1  General Category / General Discussion / Is Suicide the Answer? on: March 23, 2009, 07:25:18 PM
Lately, i've observed a rise in suicidal rates. Everyday the newspapers carries atleast one news about someone commtting suicide for various reasons. Its sad to see the reasons are as petty as a mother committing suicide bcoz her 9yr old daughter was not studying! Why are we choosing to end our lives on such trival issues? Is our life so not worth it? why cant we face situations? what is it that is making us take this step? how can we handle things better?

4  General Category / General Discussion / The Lead India Campaign on: February 19, 2008, 06:42:54 PM
Hey guys! After seeing the Times of India's Lead India Campaign what did u think about it? did it really try to find true 'leadership'Huh I have observed something and would like to express my views. Do reply.
On the auspicious occasion of celebrating 60 yrs of Independence this year, the TOI came up with a very interesting idea. I loved it!
Unfortunately, to be honest enough, I do not think the idea is being carried out efficiently.  I have many reasons to prove so. The TOI believes that the publicity the contestants of Lead India Campaign will get through the newspaper would make political parties issue tickets to them in the Lok Sabha polls. If publicity alone was the criteria which would make political leaders I would have made Sachin Tendulkar as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shah Rukh Khan as the Prime Minister of India and looking at the kind of publicity she has been getting Deepika Padukone could well become the President Of India!

This is not a joke. Because honestly CRICKET,BOLLYWOOD and HALF-NAKED stars is what the TOI publishes! It does not publish that 340 million citizens go to bed without food. Neither does it publish that tens of thousands of them die without food. Have you ever given it a thought why did TOI choose all the big cities in India? The reason is, that the TOI is published from each of these eight cities. It just wanted to boost its sales. 70% of the Indians still reside in villages. If the TOI had really been concerned with true leadership it would chose smaller places and towns and not people from the creamy layer of the society, speaking smooth glib English.

As the show started on Television people expected something better from it but it went on to become just another talk show. In which English proficiency was an indispensable criteria. English… a language half of India doesn't even understand! Most of the judges who were called upon to brighten the show, I wonder how are connected with leadership in its true sense. Dr.Kiran Bedi, Vikas Singh and Praful Patel certainly deserved to be there. But I fail to understand what were Anil Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Ajay Devgan, Akshay Kumar doing there, except ofcourse promoting their yet to be released films. Why were true leaders who made a difference like Medha Patkar, Baba Amte, Sandeep Pandey, Aruna Roy, Trilochan Shastri not called?

The questions asked to the candidates were completely irrelevant. They would not display any leadership skills as such. And moreover, we don't need people who can talk. We need people who can act and motivate others to act. These most important elements were found to be missing from the show. The heights of the show is that, it decides to choose its winners through sms polls. The contestants ask for votes by way promoting regionalism. They are further dividing the already divided India on various grounds.

The Times of India's Lead India campaign is definitely just a marketing gimmick to boost its sales. Nothing less and absolutely nothing more. But I don't think the TOI has been totally unsuccessful with its campaign. Somewhere down the line it has created enough awareness among the youth, to ask whether they are the "I" in India. Whether they are doing their bit for the country. Can They lead India??

The search for that elsuive "I" still continues.

10  The Lounge / Books Discussion / BOOKBLABBERS : Horror Genre this week!!! on: July 11, 2007, 11:40:37 AM
What happened to the horror genre?

This is a common question, and the usual answers drive those who wish to write in the fear-inspired genre toward the nearest pillow to hide their tears.  People who watch the market know that the number of current new horror titles per year is significantly lower than it was back in the late 80’s and early 90’s.  In fact, the 1998 numbers were a little more than half the total of the booming year of 1995.

However, few people realize that the genre is as healthy now as it was in the days immediately preceding Stephen King’s series of bestsellers in the 80’s and 90s.  In fact, the low 1998 number is still much higher than any year in the early 80’s, when books such as Pet Cemetery were published.  The horror genre has never been very large.  It has always been a niche market for those who enjoy the emotion of fear and are entertained by the exploitation of it.  Horror has never rivaled suspense or science fiction for number of titles published.

This fact, though, is little consolation to the writer who wishes to break into the publishing world with a new horror novel.  However, it must be noted that breaking into publishing is never easy, even in growing genres.  Though some of the lesser quality books of the short-lived horror boom would likely not find their way to stands in the current market, there is still a place for good writing and compelling stories.

Furthermore, many stories that would be considered horror by many readers have been reclassified in the changing marketplace.  For example, Dean Koontz is now often referred to as a writer of “supernatural suspense,” while other writers are lumped into “dark fiction.”  These differences are not entirely in name only; the stories do tend to focus on other aspects of the story as much as fear.  Many writers looking for their first sale may consider slightly recasting their story if they face a wall from agents and publishers who do not wish to handle horror.

Lastly, the market for horror in small press publishers is very healthy.  Some of these outfits are quite small, and some also do not put out a tremendous product.  However, a good number of them will produce a quality book, pay royalties, and perhaps even a small advance.  It’s true that going this route does not exactly produce the dream of the beginning writer to quit the day job and write full time, but it is a possible starting point in a writing career for those who love their genre and want to work toward making their living writing horror.
