Alphabet, by Matthew Van Fleet, is a work of genius. Featuring more than 100 plants and animals, Alphabet is an amazing book. With assorted textures and even a scratch and sniff, the book is an interactive and certainly engaging read through the alphabet.

The alligator is described as scaly and so on the picture of the alligator, the reader can feel the scales depicted by the texture. The bee is said to be bristly and so shall it feel. The cougar’s tongue is called scratchy; feel it and it feels like sandpaper, scratchy indeed. The elephant has wrinkles, the frogs have bumps, the giraffe’s spots are velvety, the kangaroos can bounce—all as described in the description of the animals.

Whether feeling, pulling, or scratch and sniffing, the engaging factors of Alphabet make it more fun to learn the alphabet. However, it’s not just the alphabet that readers are learning. Subtly tied in are the types of animals and plants, characteristics of the animals, and in general, new vocabulary. In addition, as if the book itself were not engaging, fun, and educational enough, there is also a removable poster at the back of the book for more alphabet practice and learning
