I joined a little late on this.
As far as i think the first thing to do is to have a word with the person who is backbiting you so that you can get to the root of the thing. May be u can clear the things with the backbiter and get him/her to retract what he/she said about u. If this is not possible you can take option C just ignore the backbiting and it will die by itself. Actually if you keep reacting to the backbiting then they will enjoy it and will feed the fire.

Regarding your turn-out, it is ur decision. U should be comfortable with what you wear and how u look. And it is up to u, whom u want to impress or please. it may be your parents or your friends.
I am very comfortable in Jeans and a tee shirt and i even wear it to meetings where people come with ties. But people generally don't comment on my turnout. They generally say that either i am on a vaccation or ask me if it is weekend already.
So i think that it is really up to you and your attitude.
