Will you testify against a criminal if you witnessed a crime being committed

(1/19) > >>

Anand VP:
Scene I:

Nitish Katara, son of an IAS officer, was allegedly killed by Vikas and his cousin Vishal Yadav on the intervening night of February 16-17, 2002.

They had allegedly abducted the victim from a marriage function in Ghaziabad. His body was later recovered from a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr District.

According to the prosecution, Katara, a business executive, was killed by the accused, as they did not approve of their sister, Bharti Yadav’s growing proximity with him.
The trial court judgement convicted prime accused Vikas and his cousin Vishal Yadav in the case who are son of Mr.D.P.Yadaw a politician and an alleged don.

Lots of witnesses who initially testified against the yadaws later turned hostile perhaps due to fear or other factor.
Mrs Katara with patience and courage stood up alone with dwindling lists of witness who were alleged threatened.The criminals were convicted.

Scene II:

Jessica Lal murder case ..several saw what happened and how was Jessica murdered in cold blood. Most of the eyewitnesses turned hostile, even her so called friends from modeling world who were tending the bar.
Result: great difficulties to bring the witnesses to the book because they were all big shots politically and had  underworld links.
But finally guilty were punished.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lots of such cases happen were criminals go scot free as witnesses do not testify or turn hostile.
Police apathy in witness safety is there in India and no there is no programme for witness protection.
In such scenario what will our viewers do if they ever end up witnessing a crime..a murder..or other heinous act.
Please vote in the poll and please post your comments.
This is not a test of bravery. It is to explore the reaction and opinions of the viewers!!
Noone would say NO, since it is a question of truthfullness and dare......and everybody wants to show that they are very truthfull......actually....as per the best of my wisdom there are other factors which force one not to become a witness in such cases.....and amongst them our family plays an important role......I dont know how many of you've seen "Damini", it is shown in that movie very well.....there it was a case of opposition from the inlaws, but many a times our own family doesnt let us go in front and be daring enough to testify the crime.....they give us so many excuses and make us not do it anyhow....that is what happens infact......if it is ourlife only we do consider and dare to come out and testify but where our family comes in picture...we backout.....That's my take on the issue....
If you ask me, yes i would testify the crime no matter who the criminal is, till the time I feel my family is safe.
K to you for creating such an igniting topic and poll
First of all Kudos to Anand for creating such a topic....you deserve lot of K's for such thought-provoking post Anand.
This is something we really need to think upon. If something happens to us or to somebody known to us then we want others to testify for us whereas if something happens to some stranger then we ourselves back out.
I do agree with Salman here....the reason is our family most of the times. Testifying against a criminal, especially when he has good links or power, means to put the safety of our family at stake.
Moreover, it is believed that if you witness some crime and try to testify against the criminal then you too have a fear of getting trapped into the case. Everyone is aware of the modus-operandi of our police and our judicial system. This is also one of the major reasons.
Many a times we have seen the example in bollywood too....It is well-known that most of the movies are financed by underworld. Many of our so called Heroes are puppets of underworld Dons and though they know a lot of their crimes but never do they dare to speak about that in open. These are the ones, who try to be epitome of bravery and truthfulness in movies. But when it comes to real life...they are even worse than a comman man.
So what I believe is that though everybody would say that he/she would surely testify a crime if he/she has witnessed it but the fact is that when the time comes....only 1 out of 10 rather 1 out of 100 would do that.
As far as I am concerned, to be honest I would see my family's safety first....and if that is taken care of then surely I wont back out from testifying against a criminal.
