Mumbai Rain E-mail
Written by Amit Kumar

Mumbai Rain

Every year, Mumbai comes to a halt for a day or two due to heavy rains, which pound the country between June and September and often leave hundreds dead across India. But this week's downpours left the city paralysed.

Most places in India don't receive this kind of rainfall in a year. This is the highest ever recorded in India's history. India's previous heaviest rainfall, recorded in the northeastern town of Cherrapunji -- one of the rainiest places on earth -- was 83.82 cm on July 12, 1910, Sharma said.

Yes that was a bad time. People spent nights in their offices, trains, cars, some unfortunate people in the upper deck of a double decker bus! There was no electricity for 3 days, and no drinking water though there was enough water in peopl's houses!

But we are Mumbaikars!! Nothing can stop us. We walked for hours to reach home, poeple distributed tea, biscuits, wada pavs to the hungry people. People gave shelter to strangers in thier houses, That is the spirit of Mumbai!

Dont you thinkj that all these natural calamities are occurring with increasing frequency nowadays. Is it a sign of the portent of doomsday or just that we have damaged the environment enough

whatever happened was a natural calamity. and lets not talk about how badly it was managed by the govt. But we got to see one thing - the spirit of mumbai. college students distributing bisciuts and water. giving lift to the helpless by bikes. somehow i feel this calamity has brought all of mumbai people closer.

Right said Friend, the fighting spirit shown by the people even in this adversary will be set in my mind for years to come. Ive seen people dying for helping someone they havent even met. The distribution of fruits, biscuits to those stranded by college students and the local residents is a sight which brings tears in my eyes and I am proud to be a part of this city.

After such a heavy rain flood, people realise that somewhere we are not take care of our surrounding and evirnoment. By this people should try to aviod plastic and dont throw garbage or plastic in trough. That effects us only, protect ourself by protecting our environment and please dont forget your general duties (Garbage should be thrown in a dust bin only, no dustbin then keep it in our pocket)if we starting do this someday a world will have a good appearance. Joy Social Group always with u all in your need.

This clamity, which was more man-made than by nature, has taught us a lesson that the people are supreme. They should not depend on any neta or govt officials, who are thrivinf at our cost by the tax payers' money. It's high time that we question the very existence of so many categories of taxes and also so many redudant govt deptts, which are eating in to our exchequer. Further, should we not demand headwise collection of taxes and their spending. We the people are the supreme. It is our fundamental duty and right to know how our money is being squandewred away.

OH BOY ! WHAT TO SAY ABOUT THESE SCENES OF A 'SUBMERGED ' CITY WHICH I USED TO REFER AS "AMCHI_MUMBAI" WHEN I USED TO RESIDE IN IT UP TO THE LATE 60's. IN THE PAST, THE "BHINDI_BAZAAR" AREA WAS NOTORIOUS FOR THIS SUBMERSION BUT NOW THE WHOLE CITY BEARS A FORLORN LOOK AFTER THE RAINS. 3 CHEERS FOR THE WORK OF MUMBAI (NEE BOMBAY) MUNICIPAL CORPORATION. IT SEEMS IR_RESPONSIBILI TY & NEGLIGENCE HAS BECOME THE ORDER OF THE DAY SAME AS IN THIS "CITY OF (P)LIGHTS" CALLED KARACHI.
