Face of Delhi MBBS Anti Reservation Students Protest

Forming a human chain, the students shouted slogans against the reservation policy of the Union government. "Respect merit, if you respect life," "Youth for equality," "Do not divide and rule" said some of the banners carried by the protesters.

The students were tear-gassed and sprayed with water cannons when they blocked traffic on Janpath, near Hotel Le Meridian crossing. Mild lathicharge was also resorted to in order to break the 'rasta roko', which lasted for more than one-and-a-half hours.

Just have a look at the pic which can easily be termed as 'Face of the Protest'...entire protest summarized in a single photo... Defiance at its best ...

The students thereafter submitted a memorandum to the UT adviser and the governor. As the students' anger mounted, they burnt an effigy of HRD minister Arjun Singh.

Slogans against the proposed hike in reservation to 49.5% rendered the air. "In continuation with the ongoing agitation we have decided to launch the nation-wide agitation next week. At the moment we are coordinating with students in several places including Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chandigarh,'' AIIMS Students' said Union spokesperson Sasmit Sarangi.

He said the agitation against the proposal to provide 27 per cent reservation to OBCs in central government educational institutions, was getting support from students of several institutions, including IITs and the Delhi University.

'We are getting letters of support from all the parts of the country.... Students from across the country are ready to support us" he added.

Protest at Jantar Mantar

Use of lathis and water cannons against these students ?
Dont these scenes match the scenes depicted in Rang de Basanti?
All they were demanding is they be allowed to meet Mr. Arjun Singh...

It is a disgarce that after over 50 years if independence we still have social, cultural and cast inequalities.
I think it is time we recognize "Excellence" as the sole criteria for admissions to the centers of higher learning.
Opportunities should be made available to cover physical inequalities but not incompetence and academic mediocrity.
Quotas while may be beneficial politically, are detrimental to the "Health of the Nation"

+2 #3 reservation policy should be abolishedsoumee 2006-05-02 22:29
its disgraceful that our own government can treat our own people like this.the minority class for whom this resevation policies were made have clibed the ladder succesfully and they are backward no more.so why should there be any more reservation policy.now this policy is being misused and the students who have the right to these seats by merit are not getting a chance.its not only a disgrace that everyone knowing this is not coming forward to help.and the people who are coming are being treated in this manner.actual point that is being overlooked by everyone is that this is not only the destruction of the career of these meritful students but also the destruction of the country's future.it's making the base of indian future a crumbling mass of deceive and trecheary.

Merits should not be compromised and only the deserving candidates should be given the opportunity.
It's high time we realize that Quality cannot be compromised and one has to really work hard to achieve goals and not depend on reservations.
The way the students were treated is not at all acceptable and it’s a pity on the government.
Nice step guys. All the best

Quota System - a handy votebank tool of the Indian Polity which is very often used by the corrupt and hypocrite polticians, is a NATIONAL DISGRACE and the people who support it , are a bigger disgrace to this nation. Its high time that we clean this rut and make it a national movement. Let us not let go the efforts made by the MBBS Students from Delhi and rather join with them in this movement. WE need to get into this dirt to clean the system . Then only we will have the india that we aspire for !

its a disgrace that the government which talks about reservation doesnt do anything abt the starvation and mal nutrition deaths.

if still the goverment decides to go a head with reservation i have a suggestion,
a commission should be set up ,thru which the people who have already benefited from reservation should be graded as EF(economically forward) and their quotas be scraped.

Reservation policy is the tool used by majority of political parties to woe votebank. Even after 59 years of independence reservation is continues.

The voice of students at should not go unheard, we all with you guys. In the current arena of global market merit will only stay, no one will buy the product coz is coming out of reservation.

The reservation policy seems to bind political parties and divide people. In the new political structure, where coali
tion is the theme, it comes no surprise that this is to do with vote bank politics -- "To gain power, lose no inch or
no method, however unjust they may be". Add to that a couple of old crooks in the government, who want to use this fulfill
their long held political aspirations.

We need to suggest a realistic solution for the being and implement proper strategies in a steadfast and persistent
manner time and again to put this across. The current demonstrations are invoking an even ended voice of support
from pro supporters, so clearly it would be difficult to get a consensus on this issue too soon. This divide itself
will encourage manipulative moves from vested interests trying to gain mileage and who want to support their own
interests.

This should be long drawn battle that should have been realized earlier, but better late than never. I pledge my support.

reservation system in itself is a disgrace to the much hyped national integration, but what comes as a bigger shock is the treatment of the protesting students at the hands of both the state police as well as the central govt.for gods sake they are students voicing their greivences against the quota system & no criminals to be put down with water canons & lathi charge.i whole heartedly support & sppreciate these students 4 braving such inhuman behaviour & yet fighting 4 thier cause. in short its our cause & we all need to pitch in. i being a student(at delhi univ)share your anxieties & extend my support to this worthy cause.

Hai there .
i am FOR reservation.
U see , in TN we have a sytem where more than 69% is already reserved in state owned colleges and universities . Here we dont really care about the central owned IIT's and IIM's, still with such kind of Reservation system we still able to produce branded specialists in vast fields .
so u cannot say reservation spoils the quality standard.
Really it is a disgrace that u (FC) people dont care about the OBC's while their knowledge level and rise-ups depend on their family income and parents understanding about the system, who are the first generation to enter a college compared with u guys/gals who are grown up in a knowledgeable surrounding .
It is not u really protesting but ur hindutva genes which insist u to keep the poor men of backward communities to stick to their present position.

And the Last word . This type of protest's can easily broken down. U never consulted the southern states to join hands for the protests , now suffer . the media is only creating an imaginery world that u have a vast support from allover the nation . IT's NOT . instead only the bombay, delhi ahmedabad belt is the only region where really things happening, All others ur receiving are created by hindutva supporting media personals .
