Tathastu is one of those hard-boiled stories that question the morality and the ethics of a society which has a gaping divide between the haves and have-nots. Sadly, the movie fails to make any impact because of poor writing and direction.

Tathastu has an excellent premise but is destroyed by the plot. The film is sappy, unrealistic stuff with hardly a true moment anywhere in it. It preaches and practically begs you to agree with it.

Sanjay Dutt works on the assembly line of a scooter manufacturing unit. His Family consists of wife Ameesha Patel and son Yash Pathak. All is well till it is discovered that the eight year old boy has a weak heart and will die if a transplant is not done soon.

Sanjay sets out to collect the Rs 15 lakhs needed for the operation. He taps his friends who have borrowed money from him, his insurance company and his employers. He falls short. Till this point the sympathy is all with him. Then he loses it. He takes patients and staff hostage and forces the doctors to operate. Only, the available heart also has another claimant, a political swami.

Tathastu is silly and inconsistent movie. It has wonderful actors who can’t rise over the really ridiculous script. It tries to be too many things: drama, action and manages to fail on nearly every one of those levels.

The film’s silliness comes in many flavors. So cold hearted are the hospital staff, that they can’t even communicate with the patients. They use over-complicated technical jargon which only inflames Sanjay. Don’t they train these people how to talk to families? They come off so villainous that they almost appear unimaginable.

Worst of all were the ridiculously over the top rich and beautiful transplant recipients. It’s so blatantly stupid and with in your face symbolism, that I wanted to leave the cinema hall.

Sanjay is just about okay .Amisha is pathetic! Rest of the cast is wasted.
Tathastu isn’t poorly made, just poorly written. There’s no saving this movie.

In short, watching 'Tathastu' is not even a good timepass. The movie can leave you with a grim mood.
