Anti Reservation Students Protest

First Hand Experience

Raunak Khisty, a student of 3rd year MBBS from Karad, gives his first hand experience at the Pune Anti reservation protest, exclusive to FunOnTheNet.

Friday 13th May 2006-   Medical students in Delhi take out a rally protesting against HRD Minister Arjun Singh’s proposal to increase OBC quotas by 27%. They are holding a peaceful march when they are suddenly lathi-charged by the police without prior intimation or any provocation on part of the students. 250 students are arrested and several are injured.

Saturday 14th May 2006- Medical students in Mumbai decide to go on a hunger strike for 24 hours from 13th May 7 pm after receiving news of the lathi-charge against their colleagues in Delhi. They also plan to have a rally on the 14th. The rally begins around 7 am on 14th. It is progressing peacefully when the police lathi-charge them-again without prior intimation or any provocation on part of the students. The stone-hearted police do not spare even the female students and the handicapped students who were a part of the protest.

How could we sit in Pune not doing anything after watching the horrifying scenes of Delhi and Mumbai? We had to do something-this issue was getting out of control.

Sunday 15th May 2006-

Morning:   Medical students in Pune decide to have a rally later in the evening. They have applied for police permission on Saturday itself but haven’t yet got it. If they do not get police permission and still decide to have the rally later that evening they risk the chance of being lathi-charged by the police. The atmosphere is full of tension as the students had made up their mind of having the rally with or without police permission come what may. Finally around noon the news trickles in that we have received police permission for the rally.Everyone heaves a sigh of relief. Now the girls can freely join us without being worried of occurrence of any untoward incident.

4:45 pm below Z-bridge: the rally is expected to start any minute.nearly 500 people have gathered. They represent not only Medical students but also engineering friends who have come to support us.one of the organizing interns speaks to everyone regarding the route of the rally, the slogans we must raise and the decorum we must maintain.Several colleges have come to Pune just for the rally- MIMER Talegaon, KIMS Karad, Rangoonwala dental college Pune, D.Y. Patil college Pimpri and also SIT, Pune. The Indian Medical Association secretary(pune chapter) assures his support to us.The air is full of enthusiasm as we begin the rally with cries of “Arjun Singh hai hai!! We proceed toward Alka talkies and our representatives distribut pamphlets regarding the issue to the common people on the streets. We yell “50% reservation, 100% politics.” And “Voice of new generation, no reservation, no reservation.”

We proceed towads fergusson college road around 6 pm when its brimming with people. We urge them to join us and say in Marathi “Bagtay kai? Shamil wha”(What are u looking at? Join us) and to our surprise quite a few people join us. The organizers of the rally-i.e the students of B.J. Medical college Pune had done a fabulous job and had even thought of arranging water for the protesters realizing that they would get tired. We finally turned on to J.M road which was also packed to capacity on the Sunday and had nearly covered 4 kms now but our enthusiasm hadn’t waned a bit. Guys and girls alike raised slogans remanding our rights. Finally after nearly three hours our rally ended at 8.30 pm. Everyone was tired but we knew we had to do it so that we can do our bit to save our future.

Finally I would like to say that its high time the youth of India wakes up and whole-heartedly joins the brave medical students in Delhi and Mumbai who are not only fighting for their rights but also the rights of you and me. If you are one of those who thinks “What can I do? I’m just single person?”- I would like to say that you have support all around you-you are not alone-you have to fight for your rights. If we don’t fight for our rights then who will?

Is 100% of so called upper caste economically empowered?
Is 100 % of declared OBC and Scheduled castes economically backward?
The answer of both questions is NO.

Therefore our assumption that reservation for the OBCs and SCs should be the basis of economic upliftment itself is wrong!
Upliftment should be based on merit - at all levels.

If an economically deprived individual does well in lower class, the government should provide scholarship for further studies. This is the only way to ensure that deserving people get to rise irrespective of their economic status. This is true democracy.

By reservation, we are rewarding all those who belong to a particular caste, rich or poor, economically sound or deprived to gain access to premium institutions without effort or merit. And the more deserving and competent candidates from other sections of society get left out. What wrong have they done in life? Is the grading just?
Is our constitution based on Ramayana?
Is not, then why are we making it out to be by creating reservations based on castes?

In a free country, merit deserves to be respected, lest we will be akin to heards of cattle, going where politians take us!

First we have a good-for-nothin Education Minister..who after a looong hibernation decides that he needs to create some ripples to make his presence felt (so that ppl do not start presuming him dead :-) )...He calls his PA and asks him to dig up a Bramhastra...Bingo....RESERVATIONS !!! The Tried and Tested Potboiler !!!

The we have the poor student fraternity...making their voices heard...Through Democratic Means....

Then we have the Police Force...Who find an excuse to test if their good 'ol lathis are still useful...and Presto...THE LATHIS STILL WORK !!!

They are supported by a Honest, Never-ever-lied-in-his-life police comissioner who says NO LATHICHARGE EVER TOOK PLACE !!!! (when even the Aam Aadmi saw a LIVE telecast of the same !!!)

Finally...We have the Pro-reservationists ...who say...ITS OUR BIRTHRIGHT....AND WE SHALL HAVE IT !!!!

GOD SAVE INDIA !!!

Personally i am against the reservation bt i was talking to one another guy who is forward caste and saying to me. Jab tak garibo ko nahi padhaya jayega tab tak India ka 2020 ka sapna pura nahi ho payega.(Unless or untill the poor people of inida would nt be educated, India cant touch the goal of 2020).

Mr. Karthu,

We are now thinking of 21st century. Comeout from this nonsence. Look at other developing country, can you find any reservation for any cast? If you want to be part of developed country, you have to develop yourself. Govt can help in finance, which also paid by higher class only.

If SC/ST/OBC are educated enough, thay have right for reservation. If they are getting only 35% for medical admission, they dont have any right even for education.

I saw the debate on ibn where the lady kept saying how poor and unpriviledged are the BCs,they have to walk Km to reach their school etc etc.I want to tell her my first hand experience......during admission for MSc,I didn't get admission in a particular institution I wanted even though I had nearly 70% marks, but a BC person got that admission even though she had 2nd class and no she didn't have to walk Kms to get their bcoz she came there in a private AC car, while I had to travel by bus and overcrowded train to get there...........so the bottom line is,with reservation it is not the underpriviledge d who are benefited but those who are very well off

The dirty politicians are using this oppurtunity to turn this into a caste war and use it to their advantage. All those pro reservation ppl who argued with the students on hunger strike were actually handiworks of these politicians and NONE OF THEM WERE STUDENTS.........that scoundrel Chaggan Bhujbal must be beaten up in public

there actually dsn't exist any divide b/w the SC/ST &upper class people. believe me i hv this OBC girl in my class, she wears clothes much fashionable than mine, has a car 2 drop her 2 college everyday & has the least tensions of job placements due to her reserved category. WHO NEEDS THE RESERVATION THEN???
HERE'S A JOKE I MUST SHARE WITH U ALL:
manmohan singh 2 bush:we are sending 100 indians to space.
bush:wow but how?
manmohan singh: 50 wud be SC/ST & OBC,10 wud be sports quota, 10defence perssonel,10 politicians,10 on vip passes,5 bodygaurds, i technician, 1 astronaut & 3 general........
what do u think who needs the reservation now???

i think this anti resevation thing is getting tooo much media and giving out wrong ideas about how the forward class or the high class of our country feel about the backward class.majority of our population is still backward and the forward ones are the one who lesser in number but have been in politics, media, professionals,e tc for a long time................so if u want equality give chance!!!!!ther e are people who ve families educated for 4th 5th generations where as others not even one generation!!!gi ve chance to equality......maybe in fact india will not progress if some people are left way behind.......

Its really bad for our country.
We had a group of 4 close friends, one of them was sc and one was obc,we never thought about each others caste. but when it came to entrance in engg college, we started thinking about sc/obc.

After reading above statement anybody can guess its reservation which is dividing ppl of our country.

I remember one discussion in my team, that if reservation will keep on increasing then we will move to USA.

Jab apne desh mein hi bhedbhav ho to yahan rehne ka fayada kya.hamare baccho ka kya bhavisya hoga.

We need to think/do something strong to end a single % reservation atleast in higher education and jobs.
otherwise ek din ye country fir se gulam ban jayega, kyonki jahan intelligent logo ki kadra nahi wo country kya develop hoga.

Agreed, but this cannot be explained to youth of India who think only for one catagory. Please go back and read history...Infact the backward class will have no place in India and will have to move out
