GURU Movie Review 'Guru' is the story of a young man in a small village of Idhar in Gujarat, who dreams big right from the start and has to face several hurdles and fight an obstinate system all alone to see his dreams come true. The mantra that the young man follows diligently is that those who do not dream do not achieve anything in life. He does reach the top, ultimately. The gorgeous Aishwarya Rai plays Sujatha Guru is based on the life story of Dhirubhai Ambani, with some cosmetic changes. A Rags to riches saga of Gurukant Desai, who was constantly berated and discouraged by his father, yet dares to achieve what was then thought impossible. Works in Turkey as a teenager, and in course of time packs his bags, comes to India, marries his best friend’s sister for her sizeable dowry and moves on to Bombay with his wife & bro-in-law to start off his own show, in the textile business. To get to whatever he wants, he bends the rules and plays the game, and makes tons of moneys for the simpletons who cannot afford doing much with their basic salaries. The movie traces Guru’s life till he grows old and shows how he becomes a true hero, an icon for the entire country.
Abhishek Bachchan plays the title of Guru Kant Desai A film like ‘Guru’ has not been seen on the Indian screen before. With its powerful story, awesome performances, melodious music (A R Rahman), splendid cinematography (Rajiv Menon) and skilled direction, the movie leaves you spellbound. However, two songs in quick succession at the film’s very beginning do make for a bumpy start.
What’s commendable is the conviction with which Abhishek gets into the skin of his character. His bulky frame moves with a swagger, his penetrating gaze reflects his shrewd business acumen and yet there is a vulnerable side to Guru that shines through now and then. Abhishek's performance is particularly excellent in the second half, when his business begins to sink and he is paralyzed. His monologue in the courtroom (with his lip twitched and his one arm incapacitated) makes him truly deserving of an award.
Bollywood sex-kitten Mallika Sherawat plays a dancer in the film For the first time, ‘Guru’ offers something to write about chemistry between Abhishek and Aishwarya. There is almost an electric vibe between the two actors and it could verily be seen in the film. Apart from this, Ash’s performance, too, is commendable.
Mithun Chakraborty has a domineering presence and is effective in his performance. Madhavan and Vidya Balan are very natural. Mallika Sherawat provides her brand of entertainment at the film’s beginning.
Vidya Balan plays the role of Meenu To sum it up, ‘Guru’ is one of the best movies to have come out of Bollywood recently. It is a perfect treat for the dreamers. A must-watch.
