The Starter of Mumbai Underworld Abdul Karim Sher Khan aka Karim Lala

Karim Lala (1911 - February 19, 2002), born as Abdul Karim Sher Khan in Kunar province of Afghanistan, was popularly known as the 'don of Mumbai' in India. He is widely recognized as the founder and pioneer of the Indian mafia in the Mumbai area. He went to work in Mumbai’s docks in the early 1940s via Peshawar, but his rise to prominence, along with Haji Mastan and Varadarajan Mudaliar, is now part of Bollywood film lore.

Karim Lala and his fellow mafia leaders were based in Mumbai. They were involved in smuggling jewelry, running gambling and liquor dens, extortion rackets and selling Hashish. Karim Lala was an ethnic Pashtun, he died on February 19, 2002, at the age of 90.

Haji Mastan Mirza Aka Haji Mastan OR Bawa;

Haji Mastan Mirza popularly known as Haji Mastan OR Bawa; was a Bombay (Mumbai) gangster and smuggler in the 1960s and 70s. He was born in the coastal town of Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu. Mastan became the first celebrity gangster of the city, expanding his clout in the Indian film industry. As Mastan's influence in Bollywood grew, he began to produce films. He was also known for his links with the legendary actor Dilip Kumar.[1][2] During the Indian Emergency (1975 - 77) he was imprisoned. In prison he learned Hindi. Haji Mastan became a Muslim leader in 1984. He formed Dalit Muslim Surakhsha Maha Sangh in 1985-8, Which had Doulatram kawle as a corporator. Aslam Kiratpuri a well known journalist, gave him ideas how to speak in public meetings after which he became a good speaker. He died in Mumbai in 1994.

Haji Mastan was a Tamilian who migrated to Mumbai from Madras at the age of 17, in 1955. In fact, Tamil was the only language that he could read comfortably. He imported daily issues of Tamil newspapers in his Bombay home. Haji Mastan at first started working on docks of Bombay as a Cooli (porter), later became so powerful as to become indispensable to the political leadership of Maharashtra[citation needed]. After joining politics he had a long list of fan followers. Haji Mastan planned his own foray into films with a project titled Mere Garib Nawaz and followed by other movies. He was a successful distributor and he excelled in cinema business. Deewar (1975 film) - a well recognized film in Hindi crime genre - is based on the life of Haji Mastan. The protagonist in the film, played by Amitabh Bachchan survives as long as he wears a plate with the number 786, dies at the hands of his honest brother.

To give the role authenticity, Amitabh Bachchan reportedly met Haji Mastan to study his mannerisms.

Contrary to the general belief, Haji Mastan Mirza was never an underworld don or even a goon for that matter. He was a smuggler and a shrewd man who rubbed shoulders with the high and mighty of his era. Be it Karim Lala or Varadarajan Mudaliar, Dilip Kumar or Shashi Kapoor, he had friends from the world of politics. To an extent, he was a simple man at home, with bare minimum needs and facilities. Though a notorious smuggler he was apprehended and jailed by agencies many time around.Though he possessed a huge mansion in a posh locality off Peddar Road, opposite Sophia College, he virtually lived his life in a small room built on the terrace of his bungalow. He worshipped the sea and had a clear view of the ocean from his terrace abode.

But once out of his home, Haji Mastan was a man of style. Always clad in pure white designer wear, a pack of imported cigarettes in hand, Mastan used to travel in a chauffeur driven Mercedes-Benz, a status symbol in those days. He made millions through smuggling gold, silver and electronic goods and was once arrested and detained under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities (COFEPOSA) Act during Emergency. The Indian movie "Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai" is believed to be loosely based upon his life.

Varadarajan Muniswami Mudaliar Aka Vardhabhai

Varadarajan Muniswami Mudaliar, also known as Vardhabhai (1926–1988) was a Tamil immigrant from Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, who rose to be a mafia don in Bombay, India. Most active in the 1970s, he was the link in the underworld history between old time mafia men such as Haji Mastan.

Varadarajan Started as a porter in Bombay's Victoria Terminus Station in the 1960s. His emergence in the underworld was largely through bootlegging and matka operations. Later, he diversified into contract killings, smuggling and dock thefts. He ruled the underworld well in to the 1980s. In the 1980s, he almost ran a parallel judiciary system, dispensing justice within his community. Varadarajan Mudaliar came into light after the reign of Karim Lala. At that time, Karim Lala, Varadarajan and Haji Mastan were the trio that ruled the Bombay underworld.

Varadarajan was very active in the Matunga and Dharavi areas of Mumbai. He organized the annual Ganesha festival in Matunga. However, after the collapse of the cotton mills in Bombay in the mid 1980s, their relevance ended.

In the mid 1980s, police officer Y C Pawar targeted Varadarajan. By the end of the 1980s, most of Varadarajan's gang members had been imprisoned or eliminated by Pawar, and Varadarajan himself had to fled to Chennai. Varadarajan died in Chennai in 1988, aged 62.

It is said that these three had good standings with their communities and looked after their interests.

Dawood Ibrahim Aka D

Dawood Ibrahim (Urdu: داوود ابراهيم, born Sheikh Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar; December 26, 1955), also known as Dawood Ebrahim, and Sheikh Dawood Hassan, is the head of an organised crime and terror syndicate in South Asia, called the "D-Company" by South Asian media. Dawood's D-Company has been identified as a criminal-terrorism syndicate by the US Congress. Dawood is currently on the wanted list of Interpol for organised crime and counterfeiting, besides association with Al-Qaeda as identified in UN Security Council resolutions 1822 (2008) and 1267 (1999).[2] He was No. 4 on the Forbes 2008 list of The World's 10 Most Wanted criminals, and no. 50 on the Forbes 2009 list of The World's Most Powerful People.

Dawood Ibrahim is accused of heading a vast and sprawling illegal empire. After the 1993 Bombay bombings, which Ibrahim allegedly organized and financed, he became India's most wanted man.[4] According to the United States, Ibrahim maintains close links with al-Qaida's Osama bin Laden.[5] As a consequence, the United States declared Dawood Ibrahim a "global terrorist" in 2003 and pursued the matter before the United Nations in an attempt to freeze his assets around the world and crack down on his operations. The Bush administration has since imposed several sanctions on Ibrahim and his associates.[6] Indian and Russian intelligence agencies have pointed out Ibrahim's possible involvement in several other terror attacks, including the November 2008 Mumbai attacks.[7][8]

Pakistan denies any knowledge of his existence. Indian intelligence agencies, such as Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), believe that some of his addresses include House No. 37, 30th street, DHA, Karachi [9] and White House, Near Saudi Mosque, Clifton, Karachi, Pakistan, and is provided protection by Pakistani intelligence agency, the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). The issue of extradition of Dawood Ibrahim is one of the major hurdles in the frosty relations between India and Pakistan.

Dawood Ibrahim, the son of a police constable Ibrahim Kaskar, was born in Mumka village in Ratnagiri in the Indian state of Maharashtra on December 26, 1955. He was brought up in Dongri, a poor area of Central Bombay with a large but not exclusively Muslim population.[15] He is of Konkani descent.
Nothing is known about his educational qualifications.

With his friends and brothers, he would go down to the bustling Crawford Market and scam gullible bargain hunters. "His first trick was to offer a customer an expensive foreign watch," recalled a member of his youthful gang. "After taking the money, he would vanish, while the customer would be discovering that Dawood had switched the watch for a stone or some such worthless object during the wrapping"(Glenny 127). A natural leader, by his late teens Ibrahim had created D-Company (his own gang). He was charged with murder as a result of his audacious bid to destroy the near monopoly enjoyed in the underworld by the competing Lala clan. D-Company emerged victorious after an intense period of bloodshed, but Ibrahim was forced to flee his beloved Bombay, and by all accounts he has never overcome his melancholy at leaving.

He is said to have begun his real criminal career in Bombay working for the Karim Lala gang (which later became his own gang's rival) exploiting the rapid expansion in the Bombay (now Mumbai) textiles industry to his advantage[14], though another version says that he began his criminal career working as a career for smuggler Haji Mastan. In either case, he eventually split from both of them and started his own gang, D-Company. He soon moved his residence to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where he has business interests alongside India.

Dawood initially started out as a mechanic on the streets of Bombay. However, because of the low pay he turned to crime full-time, as a smuggler.[17] A version also suggests that he also worked as a rickshaw puller in Azamgarh (also underworld Don Abu Salem's birthplace). He became one of Bombay's gangsters, with Karim Lala and Varadarajan Mudaliar as his seniors, but superseded all in a span of just five years—between 1983 and 1988. He became so powerful that even the aged don Karim Lala had to go all the way to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to sign a truce with him.[18]

When asked, late Amarjit Singh Samra, the former Mumbai Commissioner of Police, said this about Dawood's spectacular rise: "In 10 years, this ordinary-looking son of a police head constable had become, virtually, omnipresent in any crime."[19]

Dawood's elevation to the status of The Don was made by the late Ramabhai Naik, who in 1986 gunned down supari-king Karim Lala's nephew, the dreaded Samad Khan (who ruled the underworld till then), and paved the way for Dawood Ibrahim to become the undisputed don of the Bombay underworld. (Ironically, Rama Naik was killed in an 'encounter' with Nagpada police PSI Rajan Katdhare in 1988, allegedly at the behest and tip-off from Dawood Ibrahim only.)[20][21]

Another version suggests that Dawood used a Kashmiri woman, Nassem, to lure Samad Khan to an old building and then got him killed by his own gang comprising of Chhota Rajan, Sanjay Ruggad, Dilip Bhuva and Sunil Sawant alias Sautya, thereby elevating Dawood to the position of the Don of Bombay. (D (film) is largely based on Don Dawood's rise in the above mentioned circumstances.)[22]

Thereafter, he shifted his base to Dubai (UAE) in 1986 and established chains of businesses in partnership with local Sheikhs. He rubbed shoulders with kings and princes of the Gulf emirates and acquired more power, which at later stages saved him from being extradited to India.[18]

However, on the flipside, there is also much evidence that the Indian government has always tried to attribute Dawood Ibrahim's crimes to his links in Pakistan which have yet to be verified.

Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje AKA Chotta Rajan

Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chotta Rajan is the boss of a major crime syndicate based in India. He is a former key aide and lieutenant of Dawood Ibrahim. Starting as a petty thief and bootlegger working for Rajan Nair, also known as Bada Rajan (Big Rajan). Chotta Rajan took over the reins of Bada Rajan's gang after Bada Rajan's murder. Later, he was affiliated with and operated at the behest of Dawood in Mumbai and eventually fled India to Dubai in 1988. He is wanted for many criminal cases that include extortion, murder, smuggling, drug trafficking and film finance. His brother is said to produce films financed by Rajan. He is also wanted in 17 murder cases and several more attempted murders.

He parted ways with Dawood Ibrahim after the latter's involvement in the 1993 terrorist attack on innocent civilians in Mumbai suburban trains. Chotta Rajan and Dawood Ibrahim are now considered be arch-rivals, with a long and bloody feud between their respective crime syndicates.

This middle-class Chembur lad began by peddling cinema tickets in black in the 1980s. Then he met mentor Bada Rajan. Once Bada Rajan was killed, Nikalje received the throne and the title—Chhota Rajan. For a short period, Dawood Ibrahim, Rajan and Arun Gawli worked together. Then Gawli’s elder brother Papa Gawli was bumped off over a drug deal and a rift formed. Rajan went to Dubai—his family is still here apart from his wife and two daughters—in 1989 to attend the wedding of Noora, Dawood’s brother. He never returned. With the serial blasts flinging a spanner into the works, Dawood and Rajan fell out. There were even reports that he tipped off the Research and Analysis Wing about Dawood’s network. The Dawood-Rajan party was over, the messy end coming in September 2000, with Shakeel’s attack on Rajan in his Bangkok hotel room.

Rajan parted ways with Dawood Ibrahim, after the Mumbai bomb blast, blaming him for anti Hindu and anti national acts. It is speculated that religious differences between the two - Rajan is a Dalit Hindu and Dawood, a Muslim - contributed to the split. The break up between him and Ibrahim supposedly took place after Dawood's involvement in the 1993 bomb blast came into the spotlight and Dawood became the most wanted man in India. After the split, Rajan formed his own gang. Reports of bloody shootouts between Rajan and Dawood's hoodlums have been common since the split. In 1994, Rajan lured one of Dawood's favorites - the flamboyantly charming, yet dreaded young Pathan "narco-terrorist" Phillu Khan alias Bakhtiyar Ahmed Khan- to a hotel room in Bangkok, where he was tortured to death having being betrayed by his closest aide and sidekick Mangesh "Mangya" Pawar.

Both Phillu and Mangya were involved in the 1993 blasts as Police had filed cases on 15 March 1993 "against a 26-year-old Hindu (Mangesh Pawar) and a 30-year-old Muslim (Piloo Khan)" alleging their involvement in the blasts.

In September 2000, Dawood tracked down Rajan in Bangkok. Sharad Shetty, one of the Hindus in Dawood organisation post the Mumbai bombings, used his links with Mumbai based hotelier Vinod Shetty to track down Rajan in Bangkok, Dawood's aide Chotta Shakeel then led the hit. Posing as pizza delivery men they gunned down trusted Rajan hitman Rohit Varma and his wife. However their aim of killing Rajan failed, with Rajan making a dare-devil escape through the hotel's roof and fire-escape. He then recovered in the hospital and slipped away to evade capture.

Dawood Ibrahim confirmed the attack on telephone to rediff.com, saying Rajan tried to escape by jumping out of the window of the first-floor room where he was attacked. He, however, broke his back in the fall and was taken to hospital, the don said.

This failed assassination attempt proved costly for Dawood. Chotta Rajan's associates tracked down and shot dead Vinod Shetty in 2001 in Mumbai, as well as Sunil Soans - another Dawood associate. Both Vinod and Sunil had provided information to Dawood's associates of Rajan's whereabouts.

While the killings of Vinod Shetty and Sunil Soans did not significantly disrupt D-Company, on January 19, 2003, Chotta Rajan's associates then gunned down Sharad Shetty - Dawood's chief finance manager and money-laundering agent - at the India Club in Dubai. This brazen killing was an emblematic of the shift of power between Dawood and Rajan. Not only was the execution in a very public setting, it was at a location that Dawood considered his operational backyard. Intelligence reports have suggested that Sharad Shetty's death was a crippling blow to D-Company, since much financial and monetary information of the crime syndicate operations managed by Sharad Shetty was never fully recovered by Dawood.

While the Indian government has no overt links to Rajan, the Intelligence Bureau, India's internal intelligence agency is suspected of having passed information they collected of Dawood's operations to Chotta Rajan when they've found so to be convenient to weaken Dawood. Chotta Rajan claims himself to be a staunch Indian nationalist.

Mahindra Dolas Aka Maya Dolas

Maya Dolas was born to Vithobha and Ratnaprabha Dolas. He was one of their six children. Dolas joined the Dawood Ibrahim gang in 1980s and rose quickly through the ranks in the outfit. He ran several successful extortion rackets for the Indian National Congress criminal - politician Ashok Joshi's gang at Kanjur village, which was also affiliated with the Dawood Ibrahim's gang, D-Company. By 1989 however, he had fallen out from the Ashok Joshi gang, and on 17 September 1989, Maya led a retaliation against the Joshi gang, in which five people were killed.

It seems that at some point Maya Dolas had become too successful, and he along with some others, primarily Hindu gangsters, fell out with Dawood Ibrahim subsequently...

n an interview, gangster and don Chhota Rajan (for whom Maya Dolas worked) mentioned[4]:

"I was in Dubai when Dawood Ibrahim planned the operation as part of his campaign to cut me down to size. He had eliminated several of my boys and Maya Dolas (who was gunned down in the Lokhandwala shootout) was one of them," he claimed. He said one Samir Shah, who worked for D Company had done the ground level co-ordination for the operation. Maya Dolas had expressed his willingness to surrender, but the police insisted on eliminating him, Rajan added.

The Lokhandwala Complex is an upper end middle-class housing area in Andheri Lokhandwala Swati A wing Flat no 002 and 003, Mumbai, where Shiv Sena criminal-politician Gopal Rajwani had purchased a flat for mega-mobster Dawood Ibrahim.[5] In 1991, Dawood henchmen Maya Dolas and Dilip Buwa, along with four others, were in this apartment when they were surrounded by the Mumbai Police led by Aftab Ahmed Khan; it was later alleged that Khan had been tipped off by Dawood who wanted the police to kill them.[6]

The ensuing four hour shootout, much of it publicised live on news channels, made Maya Dolas famous, and the police officer Khan a household name.

After the encounter, it was alleged that the anti-terrorist squad (ATS) which had participated in the encounter had made off with Rs. 70 lakh (Rs. 7 million) cash which was with Maya Dolas. A number of inquiries conducted by the Mumbai police failed to turn up any concrete evidence.

Maya's mother Ratnaprabha had moved court to ban the movie Shootout at Lokhandwala stating that the movie presents her son falsely. For example, the movie shows that Maya had killed his abusive father at age nine, whereas his father outlived Maya and died only in 1997.[8] She also claimed that he was an ITI passout (Trained industrial technician).[9] Taking note of the fact that the movie also portrays Ratnaprabha as encouraging the criminal tendencies in her son, the suit wanted the producer to re-do the film. Chhota Rajan also objected to the film, saying that it "grossly distorts the facts".[10] In response, A A Khan, the cop who led up front the team which gunned down Maya Dolas, rubbished Rajan's claim, saying that the operation was videographed and it was conducted in full view of the public.

The directors claim that the movie is highly fictionalised, although it uses the real names, and the movie opens with an apology to the real characters. A Mumbai sessions court refused to stay the film release based on the case in May 2007.

Arun Gawli AKA Daddy

Arun Gulab Gawli, known to his followers as "Daddy", is a notorious criminal turned politician from Mumbai, India. He is based at Dagdi Chawl in Byculla- Saat Rasta, Mumbai. In 2004, he was elected as a MLA from the Mumbai Chinchpokli Constituency as an Akhil Bharatiya Sena candidate.

Gawli's rise in prominence is believed to be due to his "native roots" as a local lad, which makes him distinct from most other non-Marathi-speaking dons. Gawli also differs in that he is Hindu (his wife, Ashatai [ d/o Mohammed Shaikh Lal Mujawar "Nanhubhai" of Vadgaon-Paanchpir, Dist. Pune] alias Mummy was a Muslim) while most other dons are Muslim. Gawli was at one point actively supported by Bal Thackeray, but his ties to Thackeray and the Shiv Sena later broke down when Gawli's boysin their trademark spotless, crisp white shirts mercilessly slew several Sena legislators and party workers. Terrified, the hithero fearless Sena members found themselves at the receiving end of their own terror tactics. In the Mumbai (then Bombay) underworld, Gawli actively carried out kidnappings and extortions and was believed to have been supported by some powerful bureaucrats and politicians following the vacuum created by Dawood Ibrahim's flight from Mumbai. As he slowly began to lose relevance, Gawli stepped into mainstream politics, burning his bridges with his former mentors.

Criminals, or "goondas," who rose to prominence — such as Arun Gawli, Ramabhai Naik, Babubhai Reshim, Guru Satam alias Mama, Ashok Chowdhury alias Chota Babu, Anilbhai Parab, and Tanya Koli — arose mostly from the fallout of the infamous Cotton Textile Mills strike of Mumbai in the 1970s in which millions of mill workers were rendered jobless. All of the above, with the singular exception of Gawli, were subsequently brutally murdered by their mafia rivals. These unemployed and hungry, poverty stricken workers and their children subsequently took to a life of petty crime. The Dagdi Chawl syndicate was originally aligned with the D-Company but subsequently split up after infighting over the division of spoils. Once a small-time charge-sheeter in the Byculla-Mahalaxmi-Agripada-Parel/Naigaum-Chinchpokli area, the diminutive Gawli is now the undisputed Don of Dagdi Chawl and his word is law in some parts of Mumbai.

Gawli is a protege of the late Ramabhai Naik, who in 1986 gunned down supari-king Karim Lala's nephew, the dreaded Samad Khan, and paved the way for Dawood Ibrahim to become the undisputed don of the Mumbai underworld. Rama Naik himself was soon slain in an 'encounter' with Nagpada police PSI Rajan Katdhare in 1988, allegedly at the behest of Dawood Ibrahim, but is still worshipped by Gawli and his henchmen as the original godfather of Byculla's Dagdi Chawl.

Gawli is said to have international interests in countries like Australia and USA. He operates in the United States through an individual by the name of Vikram. Vikram's deeds are well known in Mumbai and other cities in India but no one can put down any solid statements about his appearance or whereabouts. Rumors give this dreaded figure the face of a teenager. Said to be in his late teens, Vikram is said to be Gawli's own grandson.

This mill worker’s son tried his hand at a factory job, but lacked the patience. He then turned his Dagdi Chawl home into a mini-fortress and began a brief flirtation with Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan. Once his brother Kishore alias Pappa Gawli was killed like a dog on the sidewalk right outside Dagdi Chawl by his erstwhile partners, he launched the Gawli gang, which cut its teeth on property disputes and workers’ unions in the dying mills. Even while he completed his jail term in the 1990s—he was convicted under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act in 1993 and sentenced to four years—he kept Central Mumbai in an iron grip. After the blasts, Gawli was suddenly the Hindu don the Shiv Sena could adopt. As the senior Thackeray once said: “If they have Dawood, we have Gawli”. Gawli was released in 1997 and broke away from the Sena to form the Akhil Bharatiya Sena. Between 1997 and 2004, Gawli has been arrested in over 15 cases—but convicted in none. He’s given up crime, ostensibly, but remains Mumbai’s solitary resident don.

"Daddy" has been in and out of jail several times and spent more than ten years in judicial custody, but has never actually been convicted. With the help of a mobile phone and willing prison and police officials, Gawli ran his criminal empire of kidnappings, extortion and murder from behind bars at Nashik, Pune and Yerawada very efficiently and ruthlessly. It was here that the Akhil Bharatiya Sena, his political outfit composed of criminals and disgruntled politicos from other parties, was born. Prison was also a safe haven for Gawli, helping him avoid assassination attempts by the rival Dawood Ibrahim/Chhota Shakeel and Chhota Rajan Gangs. His decision to enter politics and become a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly also ensured that he would not get "taken out" by a police hit squad in an "encounter".

Gawli is married to "Mummy" Asha Gawli and has two children. Asha (formerly Ayesha) is in charge of criminal operations when Gawli is in prison. Gawli's political designs suffered a major blow when his nephew and party legislator, Sachinbhau Ahir, came out openly against him and joined Sharad Pawar's NCP. He even contested against Gawli in the subsequent Lok Sabha elections on an NCP ticket, resulting in defeat for them both, but victory for the Sena's sitting MP Mohan Rawle. His daughter was recently elected as a corporator to the Bombay Municipal Corporation.

Acquitted of all charges due to lack of witnesses, Gawli today is a free man. With his political status for cover and protection, his extortion scourge continues to terrorize the businessmen of the city, the courts and police being mere helpless accomplices to his rule.

Abu Salem

Abu Salem was born in a lower middle class family in Sarai Mir village of Azamgarh district. At present, Azamgarh is known for wrong reasons because of people like Haji Mastan, Abu Salem and Dawood Ibrahim who all are related to Azamgarh. Abu's father was an advocate by profession. Abu could not complete his education after his father died in a road accident. Initially Abu started a small mechanic shop in his home town to support his family. But soon after he moved to Delhi, the capital city of India. In Delhi he worked as a taxi driver. After some time Abu shifted base to Bombay, the financial capital of India. In Bombay he worked again as a driver. It was in Bombay that he met Dawood, the underworld don, and joined his mafia. Abu Salem split from the Dawood gang in 1998.

He has unsuccessfully attempted to kill Bollywood film directors Rajiv Rai and Rakesh Roshan. At one time was a close associate of Dawood Ibrahim. Before becoming a professional criminal, he worked as a driver and hawker in Mumbai. He is also wanted in India for various murder and extortion cases.

On September 20, 2002, he and his girl-friend-companion Monica Bedi were arrested by Interpol in Lisbon, Portugal. His satellite phone was tracked using GPS technology. He has been accused in the 1993 bomb blasts as well as killing of Bollywood producer Gulshan Kumar, Indian actress Manisha Koirala's secretary, a builder and more than 50 other cases.

In February 2004, a Portugal court cleared his extradition to India to face trial in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case. In November 2005, Portuguese authorities handed him over along with Monica Bedi to Indian authorities on the assurance by then India's Home Minister L.K. Advani that death penalty would not be meted either on him or his partner Monica Bedi.

In March 2006, a special TADA court filed eight charges against him and his alleged associate Riaz Siddiqui for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. He stands accused of ferrying and distributing weapons.

Abu Salem is currently in high-security Arthur Jail in Mumbai.

He married his first wife Samira Jumani (then a college girl and a minor - 17 years old who was allegedly forcefully married by Salem) in 1991 from whom he has one or two sons. They later divorced. Sameera currently lives in Duluth, Georgia, United States. The name she used in a fake passport, Sabina Azmi, is the name she has retained till now. But Sameera Jumani is her maiden name.[ Samira Jumani aka Neha Asif Jafri is also, thus, wanted by the CBI and Interpol in a passport forgery case.

Salem later allegedly married his second wife, Bollywood actress Monica Bedi, and is yet to receive a divorce from her.

His brother Abu Hatim, a.k.a. Chunchun miyan, who still lives in Azamgarh and owns a shop called Alamat Tatari, says: "We have no contacts with our brother and even the police know that. He left us after completing his inter-college and never came back." Locals say Abu Salem went to Bombay to study further, hoping to go to the Gulf later for better opportunities. But he somehow got trapped in gangster Dawood Ibrahim's circle, they claim.

The residents of his native village allegedly don't love him. “I don’t know why he is given such attention. We have no affection for him. Salem left the village after completing his inter college and never came back,” says Tariq Mian, an elderly man who is preparing for his namaz. “His elder brother Abu Hatim, or Chunchun miyan as we call him, still owns a shop here,” he says.

Ten years ago, the man who later became Bollywood’s biggest real-life baddie was still conning buyers with cheap electronic goods outside Andheri station. Then his association with Dawood’s brother Anees paid off and he took charge of the D-Company’s Bollywood deals. Salem first worked under Chhota Shakeel but later split and took to threatening film personalities for extortion sums. He’s now cooling his heels in Portugal, in custody for travelling on fake passports with wife and failed Bollywood starlet Monica Bedi. Common belief is that Shakeel tipped off the cops—juicy revenge for Salem’s unprofessional ways and out-of-control style.

t was in 1991 when Aftab Ahmed Khan, then additional commissioner of police (north west Mumbai) who was also behind the 1991 Lokhandwala Complex shootout, heard of a thug trying to extort money from small time businessmen. "I sent two men to go pick him up. When he was presented before me, he appeared to be an ordinary scared miserable chap who thought we were going to bump him off. He was so small time. There was nothing impressive about him." Salem was released soon but the routine fingerprint record that was taken would come to haunt him. When Salem was in Lisbon fighting India's extradition attempt, the only proof that he was indeed Salem was provided by the fingerprint and photographs taken after his arrest by A A Khan. This characterisation of Khan of a petrified lad is very different from the perception of Abu Salem by his victims. After being released from jail for his petty extortion attempt, his ascent in the underworld was spectacular. He rose very quickly to become an integral part of the don's inner circle with a specialty in extorting from the Hindi film industry, channeling illicit money into film production, forcibly getting the dates of stars, and usurping overseas rights. He continued more aggressively on this path after his estrangement with Dawood Ibrahim who had by then evolved into being some sort of a paid protector of filmdom. His friction with Shakeel and Dawood's favouring of Shakeel is said to be the reason behind Salem's split from the D-Company.

Abu Salem drove a taxi in Delhi before becoming the second-in-command of crime lord Dawood Ibrahim. He was a petty criminal who rose in status in Mumbai’s underworld to be India’s most-wanted man.

Mastermind of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, Abu Salem shot to fame with the killings of music baron Gulshan Kumar, actress Manisha Koirala’s secretary Ajit Dewan and builder Omprakash Kukreja. The don also allegedly attempted to kill cine figures such as Rajeev Rai, Rakesh Roshan and Manmohan Shetty. In the early ’90s Nineties, Salem stayed with his cousin Akthar, a small-time criminal working with gangster Sayyed Topi in Mumbai. Salem later shifted to Santacruze and started a travel agency. He got in touch with one J K Ibrahim, who was working for Dawood. Through him, Salem came under the wings of Dawood.

Charming yet intimidating, Salem could unnerve people. The D-gang needed just someone like him to make threatening calls to people. Salem was given a free hand to extort money from Bollywood bigwigs. In the meantime, he also started staging shows in Dubai, where he invited big actors to impress his boss. Salem plotted the murder of Gulshan Kumar on August 12, 1997. The operation angered Dawood no end. Salem fled Dubai, fearing Dawood’s wrath.

A special team, formed under the leadership of then additional commissioner of police A A Khan, arrested him in the early nineties from his travel agency in Santacruz, northwest Mumbai. He was handed over to the D N Nagar police station in Andheri, northwest Mumbai, where Salem's in-laws had registered a case against him (mSalem had married a college girl against her parents' wishes. His in-laws filed a case of abduction against him at the D N Nagar police station). But after spending two days in jail, he was released.
