Manna Dey

Prabodh Chandra Dey (1 May 1919 − 24 October 2013), known by his stage name Manna Dey, was an Indian playback singer. He debuted in the film Tamanna in 1942. After the song "Upar Gagan Bishal" composed by S D Burman he saw success and went on to record more than 4,000 songs till 2013. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005[2] and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007.

Dey sang in all the major regional Indian languages, though primarily in Hindi and Bengali. His peak period in Hindi playback singing was from 1953 to 1976.

* * * Manna Dey: Kolkata's Coffee House weeps for its balladeer

KOLKATA - There were the routine chat sessions around the tables, but in hushed tones. The waiters served customers in their usual sluggish manner, but seemed markedly slower. For Kolkata's famous intellectual hub Coffee House was in mourning at the passing away of Manna Dey who rendered the famous song that for generations has been regarded as its anthem.

Thirty years back (1983), Dey recorded 'Coffee Houser sei addata aaj ar nei' (The chat sessions at the Coffee House have faded away) capturing the 'golden late afternoons' spent by seven friends at the joint and the successes, frustrations, tragedies and disappointments which they experienced in their later lives.

The song, which told the story of artist Nikhilesh, guitarist D'souza, journalist Moidul, wannabe poet Amol, has steeped with nostalgia generations of Kolkatans - who spent such golden moments of their youth and student lives in coffee houses with dreams of a new world order or a career of creativity, only to lose their way in the labyrinth of harsh reality.

"Today, truly the Coffee House chat sessions got over. Coffee House lost its soul. Not only me, but whoever ever visited Coffee House will realise this.

"Coffee House will remain... so will remain the chat sessions, but the man who made them immortal is now no more," Suparnakanti Ghosh, who composed the song penned by Gouriprasanna Majumdar, told IANS.

On Thursday, a portrait of Dey was put up inside the joint on College Street and garlanded, with the aroma of incense sticks filling the air. Some of the youths played the song on their mobile phones.

At the entrance, a flex paid tributes to Dey. "Legendary singer Manna Dey is no more. He will never take part in the Coffee House chat sessions. On behalf of he Coffee House family, we pray for his soul to rest in peace".

Situated in the heart of Kolkata, opposite the Presidency College, the Indian Coffee House was commissioned in 1942 by the Indian Coffee Board. Rechristened 'Coffee House' in 1947, it emerged as the meeting place for poets, artistes, literati and people from the world of art and culture.

"Manna Dey is like a fixed asset of Coffee House. He and Coffee House are synonymous. The song is our anthem. Many foreign media houses have done story on Coffee House and they too have described the song as Coffee House anthem," said Dipankar Dasgupta, Coffee House administrative officer.

"We have paid our tribute by garlanding his photo in the joint. We are also planning to organise a programme in his honour," said Dasgupta.

He recalled Dey last visited the Coffee House in 2010.

Several old timers at the Coffee House grieved.

Translation for "Coffee Houser Shei" - Sung by Manna Dey
September 25, 2009
This is the translation for the song which I sang on Sep 23rd 2009, at Kali Mata temple, Rangehills, Pune. It's a beautiful Bengali song, sung by Manna Dey. Quite a nostalgic number.

Here's the link for my video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ6moPWl1Ck

Translation:

Beginning part:

Those get-togethers at the coffee-house are no longer there today....no longer there today
Where have those beautiful evenings vanished away...they are no longer there today...

1

Nikhilesh is in Paris and Moidhul is in Dhaka, and we don't hear from them anymore,
The guitarist from "Grander" group, Goaniz D'Souza is resting peacefully in his coffin,
No one knows, what pain or shock he suffered in love, but Rama Roy is in a mental asylum today,
Omol is in great pain, suffering from a deadly cancer, life didn't spare him at all.

2

Shuja is the happiest among all of us today, she married a rich guy...
She is laded with jewellery all over her, and roams around in luxurious cars,
Nikhilesh Shainyal, the guy from Art College used to photograph for advertisements,
And whenever there was any joke cracked among us, D'Souza would just keep on staring silently without uttering a word...

3

On the same table, we used to enjoy smoking "Charminar" cigarettes for the 3-4 hours we spent there,
Sometimes we used to chat about Bishnu Dey, and sometimes we used to discuss about Jaamini Rai
Summers or rains, we all used to get together at the coffee house after completing our work, irrespective of where we were,
At 4 in the evenings, we used to start our chats, and at 7:30 we all used to get up and leave...

4

Face of a poet, and a bag hanging on his shoulders, the name of Omol would be wiped off forever,
He couldn't get even a single one of his poems published, he never managed to get the price for his talent,
At the social functions of his office, Rama Roy used to act in a play called "Manager",
Moidhul, a reporter by profession, used to read us the headlines from the newspapers, on the table, everyday..

Concluding part:

Those 7 people are not here anymore, but the table and the 7 coffee-filled cups are still here,
The garden is the same, new flower buds have bloomed here, its just that the old gardeners are not here anymore,
There are so many dreams which emanate from this coffee house and turn into reality,
And there are so many dreams which just fade away beyond the clouds, without being realized,
There are so many people who come and leave at this coffee house, Lives change...but the only thing that never changes..
is this coffee house which still keeps standing at one place, forever.

Those get-togethers at the coffee-house are no longer there today....no longer there today
Where have those beautiful evenings vanished away...they are no longer there today...
