World Heart Day 2012: Caring for your heart

Exercise everyday  for your heart’s health.

It is not true that heart disease and stroke affect only older people and the male gender. In fact, cardiovascular disease (CVD) also harms the fairer sex as much as it does to men. Children are vulnerable too to the dreaded problem.

The theme for this year’s ‘World Heart Day’ is the same as last year’s i.e., ‘One World, One Home, One Heart’, stressing on women and children in the prevention of CVDs. According to the World Heart Federation, heart disease is the number one killer of women, causing 1 in 3 female deaths (i.e. about one death per minute). World Heart Day, created in 2000, takes place on September 29 each year.

CVDs on the rise in India

In view of rapid rise of heart diseases among the Indians, especially in women and youth, it is high time that we take stock of the alarming situation and change our lifestyle and eating habits. As per a World Health Organisation (WHO) report, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) would be the largest cause of death and disability in India by 2020.

Even doctors have raised concerns with many young Indian professionals falling victims to CVDs due to odd working hours, office work stress, less physical exercise and eating junk food. Also, smoking and drinking further aggravates the situation since such sedentary lifestyle gives rise to high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, etc., causing heart ailments later.

Signs and symptoms of heart attacks

Though, not everyone has the same warning signs and symptoms of a heart attack, it is essential to listen to your heart. That way, you can act fast and get treatment, because the sooner you get help, the less damage will be done to your heart.

For some people, it can begin with a sudden, crushing chest pain that is often shown in the films, while for some, it happens slowly with mild pain or discomfort. Some people don’t have a warning sign at all. However, for those who have had a heart attack in the past, the symptoms may not be the same for the next time.

Chest pain or discomfort:

The most common heart attack sign in both men and women is chest pain or discomfort in the centre or left side of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back. The pain can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or ache. It can be mild or severe. Sometimes, heart attack pain feels like indigestion or heartburn. If you have a chest pain or discomfort, you should get it checked by a doctor.

Other common signs and symptoms of heart attacks:

-Upper body pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach
-Shortness of breath, which may occur with or without chest discomfort
-Nausea, vomiting, light-headedness or sudden dizziness, or breaking out in a cold sweat
-Sleep problems, fatigue, or lack of energy

Preventing CVDs

Diet can have a big impact on your heart’s health. Here are some principles of healthy eating for the heart:

-eat regular meals
-cut down on high-sugar food and drinks
-reduce saturated fat
-eat enough fruit and vegetables every day
-cut down on salt intake
-keep alcohol to moderate levels

Apart from having a heart-healthy diet, adopting healthy lifestyles such as - quitting smoking, staying active, maintaining a good weight, etc., can help prevent heart disease.

Heart disease and stroke, which are world’s leading cause of death claim 17.3 million lives each year, and the numbers are going up. It is expected that by 2030, 23 million people will die from CVDs annually.

Heart attacks: What to do when someone has a heart attack

Follow these steps if you suspect someone is having a heart attack.
•   Make them lie down on their back preferably with a pillow to ease their breathing
•   Put an aspirin tablet or sorbitrate under their tongue. This is because aspirin is very effective in digesting a blood clot.
•   Rush them to the hospital

Dr Devi Shetty, a renowned cardiologist tells us that maximum deaths occur in the first two hours.

What you should be discussing with the doctors if you take someone having a heart attack to a hospital

•   Insist on the taking the patient to the coronary care unit.
•   Ensure that a ECG and a blood test is done right away and the patient is monitored.
•   Insist on getting the tests done, even if the doctor is convinced. Its better to be safe than sorry.

Touch-sensitive, self-healing synthetic skin could yield smarter prosthetics

Researchers at Stanford have created a synthetic material that is sensitive to touch and capable of healing itself after being torn or cut. A paper published yesterday in the journal Nature Nanotechnology describes how chemical engineering professor Zhenan Bao, PhD, and her team combined the self-repairing ability of a plastic polymer and the conductivity properties of a metal to develop the new material, which could lead to more advanced prosthetics.

A Stanford Report story discusses how Bao and her group tested their new product’s mechanical strength:

The researchers took a thin strip of the material and cut it in half with a scalpel. After gently pressing the pieces together for a few seconds, the researchers found the material gained back 75 percent of its original strength and electrical conductivity. The material was restored close to 100 percent in about 30 minutes. “Even human skin takes days to heal. So I think this is quite cool,” [Benjamin Chee-Keong Tee], a researcher on the projectsaid.

What’s more, the same sample could be cut repeatedly in the same place. After 50 cuts and repairs, a sample withstood bending and stretching just like the original.

The composite nature of the material created a new engineering challenge for the team. Bao and her co-authors found that although nickel was key to making the material strong and conductive, it also got in the way of the healing process by preventing the hydrogen bonds from reconnecting as well as they should.

For future generations of the material, Bao said, the team might adjust the size and shape of the nanoparticles, or even the chemical properties of the polymer, to get around this trade-off.

Animals Get Bored, Too

Boredom is a hard emotion to define. Among people, responses to it vary from apathy to depression to immersion in extreme adventures.

Do animals get bored?
While it’s impossible to know what other creatures are thinking, a new study published this week confirmed that animals living in captivity suffer from boredom. Furthermore, these animals combat boredom in similar ways that humans do, like snacking and napping.

For the study, researchers from the University of Guelph, Canada, worked with 29 captive mink. Some animals were housed in plain wire-mesh cages, where they lived for seven months before the experiments began.

Another group lived in identical cages but they could access a tunnel that took them to an even bigger space that included opportunities for stimulating activities, including shelf-like structures for climbing, rubber dog toys and other objects for play, as well as water for wading and dipping their heads in. Every month, these animals got new stuff.

When it finally came time to start the experiments, the researchers presented each animal with a series of new experiences, including puffs of air, scented candles and moving toothbrushes.

Animals raised in boring cages showed more interest in new things. They also snacked more on food made available during the experiments, even though they weren't hungry. They also spent more time lying around awake than the animals given a more enriching home life.

The study’s ultimate goal is to better understand boredom and its consequences on health across species. In addition, the study’s authors are hopeful that these results will spur development of better housing environments for captive animals.

Since we can’t rely on verbal cues to signal their boredom, we found animals that are clearly uninterested in their surroundings.
